Deemed university rounds — fee mechanics that surprise families

Deemed MBBS counselling runs inside MCC with lakh-scale security deposits, tuition paid at reporting, and forfeiture rules on exit. Know the money flow before you list one.

The money flow

For deemed universities, MCC collects a security deposit at registration (a few lakh rupees — parked, adjusted later against fees or refunded per rules). On allotment and reporting, the year's tuition becomes payable to the university. Exit timing determines what comes back: leave within permitted windows and the deposit largely returns; leave late and forfeiture bites.

Confirm three numbers before listing any deemed college: this year's tuition (from the MCC fee disclosure and the university site), the security deposit for the deemed pool, and hostel/other mandatory charges. Our predictor shows indicative fee ranges — the disclosure is the authority.

Strategic notes

Only list deemed colleges whose full multi-year cost your family can actually sustain — an allotment you can't afford to join still ties up your deposit and can complicate later rounds. The fee IS the filter; use it honestly on yourself.

Deemed pools often have real vacancy movement in later rounds (fee dropouts), so mop-up/stray in this pool is more alive than in government pools — relevant if your rank is deep but budget is real.

Asked constantly

Is the security deposit refundable?

Yes within the rules' exit windows, with defined deductions in later rounds. The exact schedule is published in the MCC counselling scheme each year — read it before paying.

Are deemed fees negotiable or scholarship-eligible?

Sticker fees are fixed via the fee disclosure; some universities offer merit scholarships announced separately. Never bank on unannounced discounts.

NRI quota — worth it?

NRI seats carry higher fees with softer closings and specific eligibility documentation (sponsor relationship proofs). If genuinely eligible, they're a legitimate route — cost it fully first.
